I haven't had a chance to get the photos together from our trip this weekend, so I thought I would just offer a quick synopsis of what I will blog about this week. First of all Berlin is very cool...except when it is cold, windy, and rainy. Of course TJ and I found yet another European city with "unseasonable weather for this time of year". But we have learned this throughout our travels thus far so we were prepared for the events.
We arrived on Thursday afternoon after nearly a six hour drive to Eastern Germany where Berlin sits only 40 miles from the Polish border. It was crappy and rainy, but we decided to grab a quick bite and hop on a bus tour of the city to figure out where everything was...which was a bad idea as the bus was constantly fogging up and we could barely see anything! We then set back to our hotel for dinner and drinks (which was located in West Berlin, a little ways from the East Berlin center).
Friday we took a tour of Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp, just outside of Berlin, and it was very sobering. This camp was extremely interesting as it was not just a Nazi camp, but also a Soviet camp/prison. The weather was perfect for that tour as it was windy, cool, and offered the occassional miserable rain shower. It definitely made you wonder what the prisoners had to endure in the winter when the summer weather was this bad. Following the tour we headed to an East Berlin neighborhood where we had the best Italian meal ever! And that night we participated in the Berlin Pub Crawl along with at least 100 international friends of ours.
Saturday was a long day for us as we took two city tours...the Berlin sites and a Third Reich tour. Following the tours we had dinner at Potsdamer Platz and wandered the city. The city is truly amazing...and if you love WWII history is unbeatable.
Tomorrow I will cover the city sites, on Wednesday the nightlife, Thursday will be Sachsenhausen, and Friday will be our surprise trip to Poland that we did on Sunday.
Auf Wiedersehen!
