Ancestral Homeland

Last Thursday I drove my Mom up to her ancestral homeland of Luxembourg. The last time I went I thought I was going to the town where her family originated...but it wasn't the right place so we decided to try again and headed for Trintange and then Luxembourg City.

I took the wrong exit when we first go there and it was a happy mistake as we came upon the Mosel River and the wine country that surrounds it. Here is Julie in her familie's "old country".

Shortly (like 5 minutes) later we found Trintange which is significantly larger then Ernster, the town I thought previously to be where the Ernster's originated. It still was small, but consisted of more than just two streets.

We found the only cemetary and started looking for some Ernster's, then realizing that the family probably couldn't afford the price for burial near the church...so we didn't see any Ernster gravestones, but it still was very pretty!

It took less than 15 minutes to get from Trintange to the big and only city in Luxembourg to walk around and sight see a bit. First we had lunch on the market and then we were off to see things and snap pictures. Last October, TJ and I went and in the blog archives you can see some more photos, but here are some highlights...

A really old bridge. The Quad Cities should definitely consult with this city as this bridge has been around since the 11th century. Not only has it lasted a long time, but it is much prettier than the ones about to fall down over the Mississippi!

And the original gate to the city still stands. The houses on the road up to it used to be where the peasants lived...and now its nearly impossible to be able to afford any of the row of houses.

St. Michael's church is another one of the popular sights just inside the gate.

We also walked through the shopping district and found some cute shops! We also grabbed some refreshments...and of course Tut was not to be left out when it came to ice cream!!

It was once again a great day with my Mom and Tut. Over the weekend we took some time to enjoy Heidelberg and I will have more on that later!
Auf Wiedersehen!
